It is this year’s edition for the VGMA 23 nominations and it’s interesting to see how many Ghanaians are reacting to the popular musicians on the battle for the artiste of the Year award.
Charterhouse has announced the nominees for the Artiste of the Year for the 23rd edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards and many Ghanaians are waiting to see if their choice of musician will be selected as Artiste of the Year for 2023.
In 2010, the popular Ghanaian rapper, Michael Owusu Addo, who is best known in the showbiz industry as Sarkodie — has won the Artiste of the Year, and again in 2012. Sarkodie will be expecting to win this award this time around as his third time with his contest category with other musicians like King Promise, Joe Mettle, Kidi, Kuami Eugene and Black Sherif.
In total, rapper Sarkodie has won over 25 VGMAs, and nominated for the Best Rap Performance also, Best Collaboration, Album/EP of the Year, Video of the Year, best Hiplife Song, and many others.
Kidi has also received nominations for Best Male Vocal Performance, Best Reggae/Dancehall Song, Album/EP of the Year, Best Afropop/Afrobeats Artiste, Most Popular Song of the Year, Video of the Year, among others.
The current musician circulating in the entertainment scene, Black Sherif was also nominated for the Best New Artiste of the Year together with Kweku Darlington, Black Sherif, Mona 4 Real, Kwame Yogot and Scott Evans. Black Sherif also got nominated for Most Popular Song of the Year, Best International Collaboration, Best Hip Hop Song and Best Male Performance.
Currently, Diana Hamilton is the Artiste of the Year, who was nominated for the Best Gospel Artiste of the Year which had the likes of Celestine Donkor, Obaapa Christy, Joe Mettle, Ohemaa Mercy and Empress Gifty.
Joe Mettle as Artiste of the Year in 2017 also grabbed the Best Male Vocal Performance of the Year, Album/EP of the Year and the Best Gospel Song of the Year.
Kofi Kinaata who won the 2021 Best Songwriter of the Year will be looking to holding unto his position in this year’s awards with other musicians like Fameye, Akwaboah, Diana Hamilton, Minister OJ, and Abiani.
Bisa Kdei has been nominated in the category of Best Highlife Artiste including the like of Fameye, Kofi Kinaata, Kuamu Eugene, Akwaboah and Cina Soul.
This year’s VGMA is scheduled for the 6th and 7th May, 2022 — with live streaming edition over the web.
