Who is Tom Hawkins
Hawkins was born in Finley, New South Wales, on 21 July 1988 to Jack (former Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong from 1973 to 1981), and Jenny Hawkins. He was the second of four children and grew up in the Finley area of New South Wales.
He went to Finley High School and played for the Finley Football Club before relocating south of the border to start boarding at Melbourne Grammar School.
Hawkins’ talent for football was recognized at a young age when he was chosen to play first XVIII football for the school when just in year ten, when many of his colleagues were finishing up their final year of schooling at year twelve.
He participated in elite football competitions with the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup and the Vic Metro in the AFL Under-18 Championships.
Hawkins Professional Career
In accordance with the father-son rule, Geelong selected Hawkins in the national selection of 2006. The father-son regulations at the time only required Geelong to use a middle-tier third-round pick to take Hawkins, despite the fact that many analysts praised him as the best key position prospect in the draft and thought his junior performances justified a probable selection with the top overall pick.
The AFL changed the father-son rule for usage in the future as a result of the subsequent debate over what was widely accepted as a bargain gain for the Cats.
In the second round of the 2007 campaign against Carlton, Hawkins made his eagerly awaited senior Geelong debut. The debut was hailed as the best first-up performance in recent memory by Gerard Healy and David Parkin, who were affected by it.
With a reputation as one of the best young tall forwards in the country, Hawkins was right away heralded as the famous Gary Ablett’s replacement, whose retirement 10 years earlier had left a huge vacancy in Geelong’s forward line.
Early in the 2015 season, Hawkins experienced personal loss with the passing of his mother Jenny in April. He then skipped the round three game against Gold Coast before playing the following week against North Melbourne, where he scored the game’s only goal and also achieved the milestone of playing in 150 AFL games.
As a result of his performance, he received five votes for the Norm Smith Medal, placing third behind Jimmy Bartel (13 votes) and Joel Selwood (9) in the voting. He was later revealed to have almost been benched for the last series in favor of Cameron Mooney, a retiring forward, in the book Greatness, Inside Geelong’s Path to Premiership History.
