Ghana as a country is considered among the few countries that are blessed with numerous natural resources which have resulted in abundant mining companies in the nation. These mining companies mine for several minerals such as bauxite, diamond, manganese, gold and many more.
Mining plays a major role in the economy of Ghana as it accounts for 5% of the country’s GDP and minerals contribute 37% of total exports, where gold makes up over 90% of the total mineral exports.
Ghana is Africa’s top gold producer, producing an average of 80.5 tonnes a year. Mining is also a large contributor to Government revenues through the payment of mineral royalties, employee income taxes, and corporate taxes.

The Body That Regulates Mining In Ghana
Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is in charge of maintaining the country’s mineral sector and issuing mining and exploration licenses. The Minerals Commission is in charge of administering the Mining Act, proposing mining policy, encouraging mineral development, making recommendations on mineral concerns, and acting as a liaison between industry and government within the Ministry.
