The process of changing the ownership of a vehicle in Ghana is not difficult. It can be done at any time and even online through the drivers and vehicle license authority web portal.

It is not necessary to change the name on the license to change ownership, but it will help if you need to sell the vehicle. The process is simple and straightforward, but it does take some time.

The DVLA is a government agency in charge of registering vehicles in Ghana. The agency is also in charge of issuing driver’s licenses to individuals who successfully pass a test on their knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.

The Road Traffic Act of Ghana, 2013, section 53(1) provides that the Director-General shall maintain a register of motor vehicles and trailers which shall be called the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority Register. The register shall contain particulars of all motor vehicles and trailers registered in Ghana.

The first step in this process is to go to an authorized DVLA office with your current driving license, proof of address, and proof of identity.

  • A transfer letter
  • The vehicle to be transferred
  • Two (2) coloured passport size picture of the former owner ( vendor)
  • Two (2) recent coloured passport size pictures of the new owner ( buyer)
  • ID card of both vendor and buyer

Steps On How To Change DVLA ownership

  • The seller and buyer all needs to be present for the transfer
  • Submit the transfer letter.
  • Bring the vehicle in question for inspection
  • Make payment
  • Acquire, complete and sign forms ( C &VRC)
  • Aaffix pictures and present for processing
  • Obtain roadworthiness certificate irrespective of the status of the present roadworthiness validity

The amount charged for change of ownership by DVLA is around 250 – 500 Ghana cedis depending on the vehicle type.
