On April 27, 1988, Melissa Viviane Jefferson was born in Detroit, Michigan. When she was ten years old, her family moved to Houston, Texas. She grew up with a strong passion for music. She started a band called Cornrow Clique with a few of her close pals who were also musically inclined.
She started rapping after graduating from Alief Elsik High School in Alief in 2006, and she went on to study classical music at the University of Houston with a focus on the flute. After her father passed away in 2010, Melissa quit college and relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota to concentrate on her music career in 2011.
Career
In 2008, Lizzo officially launched her career. However, her primary career-supporting projects began in 2011. She assembled a trio of female rappers, called Chalice, and they put out their debut record, “We Are the Chalice.”
