Who is Doja Cat?
Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini was born on October 21, 1995, into an artistic family in the Tarzana section of Los Angeles, California. Her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is a South African actor of Zulu descent who is most known for playing Crocodile in the original Broadway cast of the musical Sarafina! and the 1992 film adaptation. Her mother, Deborah Sawyer, is an American graphic designer of Ashkenazi Jewish lineage.
Dlamini’s family relocated from Tarzana to Rye, New York, shortly after she was born, and she lived there for five years with her painter and architect maternal grandmother. When she was eight years old, Dlamini came back to California with her mother and brother to live at the Sai Anantam Ashram, a commune in Agoura Hills, where she followed Hinduism for four years. Her family later relocated to Oak Park, where she began taking dance lessons and had a “sporty childhood,” frequently skateboarding and going to surf camps in Malibu.
As she became older and left the ashram, she enrolled in breakdancing training and joined a poplocking troupe that competed in dance battles all around Los Angeles while she was still a high school student. Dlamini had singing lessons from her aunt, a vocal coach, in order to prepare for her audition at Central Los Angeles Area New High School #9, a performing arts high school in Los Angeles. She routinely skipped class to take part in online discussion sessions. Dlamini reports that in the eleventh grade, after getting disillusioned about her academic and professional goals, she realized that “performing and music was all [she] ever cared about.” Eventually, in her junior year at age 16, she left school.
