Districts in Greater Accra Region and their capitals

The Greater Accra Region, with a total land surface area of 3,245 square kilometers, is the least of Ghana’s 16 administrative regions. With 87.4 percent of the country’s population residing in cities, the Greater Accra area is the most urbanized in the country. Accra, which is also the capital of Ghana, is the capital city of the Greater Accra Region.
The Eastern Region borders the Greater Accra Region on the north, the Volta Region on the east, the Gulf of Guinea on the south, and the Central Region on the west.

Per the Greater Accra region map, the territory goes all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, and most of the districts are right on the beach which is excellent for the city in bringing in tourists from all walks of life.

According to the 2021 population and housing census, Greater Accra Region is the most populated region in Ghana with 5,455,692 inhabitants, overtaking the Ashanti Region which used to be the most populated.

Brief History Of Greater Accra Region

Greater Accra Region was geographically and legally part of the Eastern Region in 1960, when it was known as Accra Capital District. The Minister in charge of local government, on the other hand, was in charge of it individually. Greater Accra was established as a legally independent territory on July 23, 1982, by the Greater Accra Region Law (PNDCL 26), which included the Ada local council area.

In 1988-1989, legislation was passed to divide Ghana into regions in terms of service provision and assure resource efficiency. Considering a public outcry over corruption that resulted in grafts and funds misappropriation, this decision was made. The Brong-Ahafo, Volta, Western, Eastern, Upper East, Upper West, Central, Northern, Greater Accra, Volta, and Ashanti regions were then gazetted. The region would then be broken down into smaller units, such as districts in Greater Accra, to aid in resource management and governance.

The Greater Accra region has twenty-nine (29) administrative Districts/Municipals/Metropolitans. The Regional Coordinating Council is located in Accra as it Regional Capital.
