Richard Garfield, an American, and Lynn, a British mother, gave birth to Andrew Russell Garfield in Los Angeles, California. With his parents and older brother, he relocated to Surrey, England, when he was three years old. He is a Jew with English and Polish ancestry. Andrew was raised in a middle-class household and went to the City of London Freemen’s School, a private institution. While he was still in school, he started performing in youth theater plays. He enrolled in the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama at the age of 19.
His first professional roles were on the stage, then in the UK’s Channel 4 teen drama Sugar Rush (2005), he made his television debut. Followed by additional TV work, many film appearances, and a two-part story that reached a wider UK audience in Doctor Who’s third season (2005). In the 2010 movies The Social Network and Never Let Me Go, Garfield played the roles of Eduardo and Tommy, respectively. He was chosen to play the lead role in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), a reboot of the Spider-Man movie series, in the same year. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) saw him repeat the part before handing it off to Tom Holland.
Garfield resumed his career as a drama actor, appearing in Ramin Bahrani’s 99 Homes (2014) alongside Michael Shannon, Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge (2016), which is based on the true story of Seventh Day Adventist war hero Desmond Doss, and Martin Scorsese’s Silence (2016), in which he co-starred with Adam Driver as Jesuit priests. In the 2017 drama Breathe, which was directed by Andy Serkis, Garfield played Robin Cavendish, an adventurous man who has polio and is crippled. He plays the lead role in David Robert Mitchell’s 2018 noir suspense film Under the Silver Lake.
