Early Life
Alex De Minaur was born in Sydney, Australia, on February 17, 1999. His mother Esther is Spanish, whereas Anibal, his father, is Uruguayan. Dominic is his older brother, and Daniel, Cristina, and Sara are his three younger siblings.
De Minaur holds dual citizenship with Australia and Spain. He was born and raised in the south Sydney suburb of Carss Park for the first five years of his life before moving to Alicante, Spain. He went to primary school in Spain and completed his high school education while on the tour.
De Minaur started playing tennis at the age of three at the Parkside Tennis Courts in Kogarah Bay, which is home to the Sydney Private Tennis Academy. Kerry Dock then Cindy Dock, an Australian former player, were his coaches.
Professional Career
In January 2017, De Minaur made his ATP Tour debut in the main draw at the Brisbane International. He qualified for the main draw using a wildcard after defeating Mikhail Kukushkin and Frances Tiafoe in the qualifying round. There, he was defeated in straight sets by Mischa Zverev of Germany.
At the Sydney International in January 2019, De Minaur, then 19 years old, won his first ATP singles title. In the championship match, he defeated Italian Andreas Seppi 7-5, 7-6(5) to win the title at home. Since his mentor Lleyton Hewitt won the competition in 2001, De Minaur has been Sydney’s youngest winner.
De Minaur kept making tremendous strides, making it to the third round of the 2019 Australian Open before falling to Rafael Nadal.
De Minaur lost in the second round of Wimbledon, but he recovered to win his second career title in Atlanta by defeating local favorite Taylor Fritz 6-3, 7-6(2). He only dropped seven first-serve points during the Atlanta match that led to victory.
At the US Open in 2020, De Minaur had his first-ever grand slam quarterfinal appearance. He defeated Richard Gasquet and Vasek Pospisil among others to advance to the round of 8, when he was defeated by Dominic Thiem in straight sets.
De Minaur fell to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the fourth round of the Australian Open in January 2023, losing in straight sets while only winning five games.
De Minaur defeated Tommy Paul to win the Mexican Open in March, giving him his sixth career victory and first ATP 500 crown. He eventually climbed back into the top 20 on March 6, 2023.
