History
Wesley Girls’ Senior High School (WGHS) is a girls’ secondary school in Cape Coast, Ghana’s central region. Harriet Wrigley, the wife of a Methodist clergyman, established it in 1836. The institution started with 25 students as founding students. The institution is named after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism.
The Methodist church agreed to provide higher education for girls because of their academic competence. Their main aim when they started was to offer girls training in reading and writing, sewing and housekeeping and spiritual development.
The two levels, primary and secondary, proceeded in stops and starts, and were occasionally closed owing to severe funding shortages. It even lost its identity for a time when it had to join forces with Mfantsipim to become the Collegiate School, a co-educational secondary school.
Miss Olive Compton moved the Secondary School division of the school to its current site at Kakumdo in 1951, thereby separating it from the primary school.
